    The idea of national parks began in the US, which now has 54 of them, covering over 80000 square miles (200000 square kilometers). The great majority are in western states. The National Park Service is responsible for protecting the natural state of the parks for the benefit of the public. To try to stop this, the National Park Service announced in 1997 that people would only be able to visit some parks using public transport.

It has few visitors because it is very remote. The most popular park is the Great Smoky Mountains.
